Objectives

In the OKR framework, Objectives are the goals that set the direction and vision for the work to be done. They are qualitative statements that define what you want to achieve, whether it's improving customer satisfaction, launching a new product, or building a high-performing Team.

Objectives should be inspiring, challenging, and time-bound, providing a clear focus for the efforts of Individuals, Teams, and WeSalute as a whole. They are the "north star" that guides decision-making and prioritization, ensuring everyone is working towards a common purpose.

Objective Types

  • Company-Wide
  • Team
  • Individual

Company-wide Objectives

Company-wide Objectives within the OKR framework represent aspirational goals, embodying the desired future state of WeSalute. They encapsulate WeSalute's ambition, pushing WeSalute towards a vision of what it could achieve. These objectives are high-level, overarching, and often exceed the WeSalute's immediate capacity to execute within a standard OE cycle. As such, they are considered "aspirational" and are carried forward until successfully realized. Objectives provide the guiding "north star" for WeSalute, inspiring and motivating Teams and Team Members to strive for continuous growth and improvement.

Team Objectives

Team Objectives within the OKR framework are committed goals designed to directly support and advance WeSalute's broader aspirational objectives. They are specific, measurable, and achievable within a given OE cycle. Team Objectives provide a clear roadmap for how the Team(s) will contribute to the WeSalute's overarching vision, detailing the concrete outcomes they aim to achieve. Unlike aspirational objectives, Team Objectives are not carried over if unmet; instead, resources and schedules are adjusted to ensure their successful completion by the end of the cycle.

Individual Objectives

Individual Objectives within the OKR framework are primarily focused on personal growth and development. While they should align with and support Team and WeSalute Objectives, they are more flexible and personalized. These Objectives are meant to empower individual Team Members to identify areas for improvement, acquire new skills, or enhance their performance. Individual Objectives can be aspirational or committed, depending on the nature of the goal and the individual's desired pace of development. They offer a framework for self-improvement and continuous learning within the context of the broader organizational WeSalute goals.

Tactics

Ideating Objectives (hint : -dev)

The OKR Ideation period, encapsulated into the Operational Excellence Opportunity Window, is a pivotal time-period in the OKR framework, dedicated to crafting meaningful and impactful Objectives. This period encourages Teams and Team Members to step back from their daily routines and engage in strategic thinking, focusing on the bigger picture. By analyzing past performance, identifying areas for growth, and brainstorming innovative ideas, teams can set ambitious goals that align with the overall WeSalute strategy.

The OE Opportunity Window provides plenty of time to ideate or brainstorm on Objectives. Gather thoughts with a Miro board; to collaborate, strategize, hypothesize, create working drafts and assign ownership at the team or individual level.

tip

Not all objectives need to perfectly align with Company-wide Objectives. Not every objective you and/or your Team is looking to achieve needs to perfectly reflect the company-wide objectives. However, you should have at least one that does.

Creating Objectives (hint: -stage)

Creating Objectives is about refinement, distillation, and alignment. As you exit the Ideation period, previous thoughts should be removed and a clearer Objective should begin to form. Your goal during this time is to tie your Objective to a Key Result and prepare to publish an OKR(s).

Publishing Objectives (hint: -prod)

Publishing Objectives and tracking Key Results is done in Fellow. To publish your OKR it must be in Fellow at the Beginning of the Quarter.
